It’s a thinkers course, you can’t just grab your driver and bash away because there are some holes there that’ll eat you up. My favourite is the par-4 13th which calls for a draw off the tee to leave you a mid iron into a green that has a ridge across and is harder than it looks. The hole wouldn’t look out of place on some of the best layouts in the world

Some people don’t like to finish with a short hole, but I think the 18th at Saffron Walden is a very strong hole. In fact, all the par-3s there are good. The 5th is the signature hole with a great view, I like the pot bunker on the 7th and the 11th has a very narrow green. It’s an extremely pleasant place to play golf

I found Saffron Walden very picturesque, well designed and in excellent condition. The 5th hole really stuck in my mind. A fabulous par-3 from a tee high on the hill that gives you a great view across to Audley End House. Not a long layout, but the greens are such that if they tuck the pins away, it can be very challenging indeed. I really enjoyed it
